This study compares the internal fixation of mandibular fractures using either rigid 2.7 mm AO/ASIF plates or mini-plates. In the rigid plate group, 88 fractures were fixed with 88 plates.

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, a rare inborn error of metabolism, is characterized by mental retardation and factitious oral lesions, which cause immense difficulties in its management. A case of an 11-year-old boy, the elder of two siblings with this condition, who had severe self-inflicted injuries to oral and perioral tissues is presented highlighting the different treatment modalities considered. A tailor-made lipguard proved to provide the best cosmetic result short term.

A case is reported of right-sided tonic pupil in isolation (Adie's pupil) following Le Fort I maxillary osteotomy. It is difficult to identify whether this rare finding immediately postoperatively is either a pure coincidence or a genuine complication of surgery.

A desmoplastic fibroma of the mandible in an 11-year-old girl provided a difficult diagnosis because of its similarity, both clinically and histologically, to a low-grade fibrosarcoma following its rapid recurrence after primary local curettage. Immediate one-stage microvascular musculocutaneous reconstruction served to allow complete excision of the lesion and minimize the degree of psychological trauma. The differential diagnosis and the significance of cartilagenous elements present in the lesion are discussed.
