Clinical Relevance: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXS) is a common age-related disorder associated with glaucoma and cataract. Despite its clinical importance, the pathogenesis of PXS is not yet fully understood.

Background: To evaluate levels of SCUBE-1 (signal peptide, CUB domain, and epidermal growth factor-like domain containing protein 1) in the serum and aqueous humour of patients with PXS in comparison with non-PXS controls.

Methods: The study was a retrospective investigation by the Department of Medical Biochemistry of the Ankara Training and Research Hospital between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2022. Our study evaluated the results of 6297 patients aged 18-95 years who underwent cholesterol panel TC, TG, HDL-C, and direct LDL-C in our laboratory. The estimated LDL-C was calculated according to Friedewald, Martin/Hopkins, and Sampson formulae.

Article Synopsis
  • Sepsis is a major health issue in newborns, and researchers studied the effectiveness of the sTREM-1 biomarker for identifying early onset neonatal sepsis (EONS) in 52 suspected cases compared to 30 healthy newborns.
  • They found that while certain other biomarkers (like CRP and neutrophil levels) were significantly elevated in EONS cases, sTREM-1 levels did not show a meaningful difference between EONS patients and healthy newborns.
  • The study concluded that more extensive research with larger groups and repeated measurements is needed to determine the real value of sTREM-1 in clinical practice for diagnosing neonatal sepsis.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the effects of lipemia on clinical chemistry and coagulation parameters in native ultralipemic (NULM) and intravenous lipid emulsion (IVLE) spiked samples.

Materials And Methods: The evaluation of biochemistry (photometric, ion-selective electrode, immunoturbidimetric method), cardiac (electrochemiluminescence immunoassay method) and coagulation (the viscosity-based mechanical method for prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen and the immunoturbidimetric method for D-dimer) parameters were conducted. In addition to the main pools, five pools were prepared for both types of lipemia, each with triglyceride (TG) concentrations of approximately 2.

Objective: The high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the population causes physicians to request more vitamin D tests and increases laboratory costs. It is aimed at investigating the demanded numbers and cost analyzes of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) tests with the big data obtained from the national information health system of the Turkish Ministry of Health.

Methods: Between 2017 and 2018, all inpatient and outpatient tests and 25(OH)D tests in all medical biochemistry laboratories in Turkiye were determined based on department and institution type.
