Modelling of liquid-solid batch adsorption based on mass transfer and conservation equations results in differential equations that may have or not an analytical solution. Even when analytical solutions are available, several simplified models can be considered for evaluating kinetic data of batch adsorption experiments. However, these simplified models are commonly used regardless of the premises considered in its development, and the analysis of the kinetic experiments based on these simplified models may be severely compromised.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Intragastric balloon (IGB) use is indicated for patients whose BMI precludes the option of bariatric surgery or who need to lose weight prior to undergoing surgery. It is a minimally invasive procedure and currently there are two main models of IGBs in use, the non-adjustable intragastric balloon (NIB), implanted for six months, and the adjustable intragastric balloon (AIB), implanted for up to 12 months.
Objective: Analyze clinical characteristics between patients receiving non-adjustable gastric balloon and the adjustable (prolonged implantation) intragastric balloon.
The observed repulsive behavior of two initially collinear cracks growing towards each other and leading to a hook-shaped path questioned recently the validity of the principle of local symmetry within linear elastic fracture mechanics theory. Our theoretical and numerical work solves this dilemma, providing the precise geometric conditions for the existence of this repulsive phase. We moreover reveal a multiscale behavior of the repulsive-attractive transition, explaining its ubiquitous occurrence, but also the difficulty to predict the final cracks' paths.
