Lowlanders sojourning for more than 1 day at high altitude (HA) experience a reduction in plasma volume (PV) that increases haemoglobin concentration and thus restores arterial oxygen content. If the sojourn extends over weeks, an expansion of total red cell volume (RCV) occurs and contributes to the haemoconcentration. While the reduction in PV was classically attributed to an increased diuretic fluid loss, recent studies support fluid redistribution, rather than loss, as the underlying mechanism.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common inherited heart disease and the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young people. Mutations in genes that encode structural proteins of the cardiac sarcomere are the more frequent genetic cause of HCM. The disease is characterized by cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis, which is defined as the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix proteins, mainly collagen I and III, in the myocardium.

Article Synopsis
  • hiPSC-CMs are being used to model arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM), a genetic heart disease with varying symptoms due to incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity.
  • Six hiPSC lines were created from blood samples of ACM patients, asymptomatic carriers, and a healthy control, with detailed analysis revealing significant molecular and functional differences among these cell lines.
  • The study suggests that hiPSC-CMs effectively demonstrate how ACM can manifest differently in individuals, making them a valuable tool for researching the disease's incomplete penetrance.

Altitude exposure may suppress appetite and hence provide a viable weight-loss strategy. While changes in food intake and availability as well as physical activity may contribute to altered appetite at altitude, herein we aimed to investigate the isolated effects of hypobaric hypoxia on appetite regulation and sensation. Twelve healthy women (age: 24.
