Background: Chronic pain is a leading cause of disability and negatively impacts biological/physical, psychological, and social aspects of life resulting in significant pain interference or disability. This project was part of a longitudinal mixed-methods implementation evaluation of the TelePain-Empower Veterans Program (EVP), a non-pharmacological chronic pain intervention. The purpose of this quality management project was to examine electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROs) including primary pain-related (intensity, interference, catastrophizing, kinesiophobia) and secondary outcomes (physical, psychological, acceptance, social) to determine TelePain-EVP effectiveness.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Previous investigations have shown that local application of nanoparticles presenting the carbohydrate moiety galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-gal epitopes) enhance wound healing by activating the complement system and recruiting pro-healing macrophages to the injury site. Our companion in vitro paper suggest α-gal epitopes can similarly recruit and polarize human microglia toward a pro-healing phenotype. In this continuation study, we investigate the in vivo implications of α-gal nanoparticle administration directly to the injured spinal cord.

In a cross-sectional study of Black Veterans with chronic pain at the Atlanta VA Health Care System (N = 380), we used path analysis to explore the roles of racialized discrimination in health care settings, pain self-efficacy, and pain-related fear avoidance beliefs as potential mediators of pain outcomes among Black Veterans with and without an electronic health record-documented mental health diagnosis. In unadjusted bivariate analyses, Black Veterans with a mental health diagnosis (n = 175) reported marginally higher levels of pain-related disability and significantly higher levels of pain interference compared to those without a mental health diagnosis (n = 205).
