Importance: Recent studies have found an association between COVID-19 infection and deeper sedation in mechanically ventilated patients, raising concerns about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pain, agitation, and delirium (PAD) management practices overall.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess differences in PAD management in patients without COVID-19 infection in pre- and peri-COVID-19 pandemic timeframes.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This was a single-center, retrospective, pre-/post-cohort analysis of mechanically ventilated adult patients without COVID-19 infection admitted to an ICU in Boston, MA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on cerebral pseudotumoral lesions (CPTL) greater than 2 cm, primarily in patients referred for evaluation of multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • Most of the 75 patients studied had MS (58.7%), with relapsing disease and specific lesion characteristics being significantly more common in this group compared to non-MS patients.
  • Key indicators such as headache, the nature of disease progression, and certain MRI traits could help differentiate between MS and non-MS conditions, suggesting a need for further research with larger sample sizes.

Optimization of the efficiency of the photocatalytic degradation of organic and pharmaceutical pollutants represents a matter of fundamental and practical interest. The present experimental and DFT study deals with evaluation of OH radical binding energy as a simple computational descriptor of the catalytic activity of metal-decorated TiO photocatalysts for the photodegradation of the widely used antibiotic ciprofloxacin. Five metals commonly used in catalytic materials (Zr, Pt, Pd, Fe, and Cu) were deposited on the TiO surface, and the obtained photocatalysts were characterized experimentally (XRPD, ICP-OES, and SEM) and theoretically (DFT).
