Chicken meat (broiler) production is a rapidly growing livestock sector in India, and one dominated by contract farming. Studies have reported high levels of antibiotic use in Indian broiler farms which is concerning given this is one of the driving forces for the development of antibiotic resistance. This study used the economic lens of agency theory to examine strategic decisions which occur during contract broiler production and their potential impact on antibiotic use, using West Bengal as a case study.

Article Synopsis
  • Spin defects in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), particularly negatively charged boron vacancy centers, are gaining attention for their potential in quantum sensing applications.
  • This study focuses on engineering spin defects in boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), showing that these defects can be distributed along and around the nanotubes.
  • The unique tubular structure of BNNTs allows for better control and placement of these spin defects, promising advancements in high-resolution sensing technologies and further understanding of spin defect behavior in hBN.

The activation and functional differentiation of CD8 T cells are linked to metabolic pathways that result in the production of lactate. Lactylation is a lactate-derived histone post-translational modification; however, the relevance of histone lactylation in the context of CD8 T cell activation and function is not known. Here, we show the enrichment of H3K18 lactylation (H3K18la) and H3K9 lactylation (H3K9la) in human and mouse CD8 T cells, which act as transcription initiators of key genes regulating CD8 T cell function.

The activation and functional differentiation of CD8 T cells are linked to metabolic pathways that result in the production of lactate. Lactylation is a lactate-derived histone post-translational modification (hPTM); however, the relevance of histone lactylation in the context of CD8 T cell activation and function is not known. Here, we show the enrichment of H3K18-lactylation (H3K18la) and H3K9-lactylation (H3K9la) in human and murine CD8 T cells which act as transcription initiators of key genes regulating CD8 T cell phenotype and function.

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized in part by a dysregulated response to tissue hypoxia. While intravenous (IV) steroids are the mainstay of treatment for acute severe UC (ASUC), up to one-third of patients are refractory to steroids alone and require rescue therapy.

Case Description: A 71-year-old female with extensive UC on infliximab presented with abdominal pain and more than 10 bloody bowel movements per day.
