Pet dogs are a valuable natural animal model for studying relationships between primary immunodeficiencies and susceptibility to and other opportunistic respiratory pathogens. Certain breeds, such as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, are over-represented for pneumonia (PCP), suggesting the presence of a primary immunodeficiency in the breed. Here, we report the discovery of a nonsense variant in three Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs with either PCP (n = 2) or refractory pneumonia (n = 1).

A skin substitute developed in Australia 2 decades ago for use in acute burns was recently introduced into the United States for the treatment of open wounds. This product has been shown to be very efficacious for coverage of debrided burn wounds. It consists of an inorganic synthetic woven layer that induces cellular ingrowth and deposition of interstitial tissue.

Acute and chronic wounds involving deeper layers of the skin are often not adequately healed by dressings alone and require therapies such as skin grafting, skin substitutes, or growth factors. Here we report the development of an autologous heterogeneous skin construct (AHSC) that aids wound closure. AHSC is manufactured from a piece of healthy full-thickness skin.

Background: In an initial trauma evaluation, computed tomography of the head (CTH) is performed to assess for life-threatening intracranial injury. Given the high incidence of concomitant facial injuries, many facial fractures are diagnosed incidentally during this evaluation. Although maxillofacial CT (CTMF) is widely accepted as the most sensitive method for evaluating facial fractures, it is often excluded from the initial survey.
