Enzymes that degrade synthetic polymers have attracted intense interest for eco-friendly plastic recycling. However, because enzymes did not evolve for the cleavage of abiotic polymers, directed evolution strategies are needed to enhance activity for plastic degradation. Previous directed evolution efforts relied on polymer degradation assays that were limited to screening ∼10 mutants.

A Horseradish Peroxidase-Mediator System for Benzylic C-H Activation.

Enzyme-mediator systems generate radical intermediates that abstract hydrogen atoms under mild conditions. These systems have been employed extensively for alcohol oxidation, primarily in biomass degradation, but they are underexplored for direct activation of C(sp)-H bonds in alkyl groups. Here, we combine horseradish peroxidase (HRP), HO, and redox mediator N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) for C(sp)-H functionalization of alkylbenzene-type substrates.

What makes internal medicine attractive for the millennial generation? A survey of residents in internal medicine in Switzerland.

Aims: A new generation of physicians, millennials (also known as Generation Y), are entering residency programmes in internal medicine, and these young men and women learn and work in ways that are different from those of past generations. The aim of the present study was to investigate aspects contributing to the attractiveness to young residents of a career in general internal medicine (GIM) compared with medical subspecialties (SUB).

Methods: In a cross-sectional online survey, we included residents working in residency facilities in GIM in German-speaking Switzerland.

Recent studies investigated participation and performance trends in age group half marathoners and full marathoners for a single event. The present study investigated participation and performance trends in age group athletes in all half marathons and full marathons held in a single country during a given period of time. Changes in running performance and age of 226,754 half marathoners and 86,419 full marathoners competing in Switzerland between 2000 and 2010 were analyzed using linear regression analyses.
