Nimodipine, a calcium antagonist, has been shown to increase the detoxification of soman. In this study the cerebral microcirculatory effects of nimodipine and the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor soman was studied. Anaesthetised rats were administered nimodipine, 10 mg kg(-1) or vehicle intra-peritoneally, and 1h later exposed to 45 μg kg(-1) soman intravenously.

Cerebral vasospasm is the major cause of delayed ischemia in patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). The Fisher grading scale has been used to predict patients in risk of developing vasospasm. Improved radiological techniques and treatment may have changed the relevance of the Fisher scale.

Conjoined pygopagus twins are very rare. They represent about 17% of all conjoined twins and commonly share the gluteal region, terminal spine, and lower gastrointestinal, urological, and reproductive tracts. Meticulous preoperative investigations and planning as well as a multispecialty team approach contribute to the success of surgical separation.

Background: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an established treatment method for therapy-refractory epilepsy and, in Europe, for treatment-resistant depression also. Clinical and experimental investigations have also shown positive effects of VNS on cognition in epilepsy and depression. The purpose of the present pilot study was to investigate the effect of VNS on cognition in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

The aim of this study is to monitor excitatory amino acids (EAAs) in the extracellular fluids of the brain and to characterize regional neuronal damage in a new experimental model for brain injury, in which rabbits were exposed to 180-260 krad/s2 rotational head acceleration. This loading causes extensive subarachnoid hemorrhage, focal tissue bleeding, reactive astrocytosis, and axonal damage. Animals were monitored for intracranial pressure (ICP) and for amino acids in the extracellular fluids.
