Aims: The outcomes of patients with unexpected positive cultures (UPCs) during revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remain unknown. The objectives of this study were to establish the prevalence and infection-free implant survival in UPCs during presumed aseptic single-stage revision THA and TKA at mid-term follow-up.
Methods: This study included 297 patients undergoing presumed aseptic single-stage revision THA or TKA at a single treatment centre.
Introduction: Classifying complex acetabular defects in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) by means of conventional radiographs comes with significant limitations. Statistical shape modelling allows the virtual reconstruction of the native pelvic morphology, hereby enabling an analytic acetabular defect assessment. Our objective was to evaluate virtual clinics in orthopaedic practice and determine how to use them effectively and sustainably.
Methods: We surveyed 100 consecutive patients participating in orthopaedic virtual phone clinic (VPC) at an academic hospital to evaluate patient satisfaction against face-to-face (F2F) consultations and obtain suggestions for improving patient experience, and we surveyed 23 clinicians who conducted orthopaedic VPCs in 2020.
Purpose: To evaluate the evidence for operative and non-operative management of isolated posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries.
Methods: Using Pubmed, EMBASE and Cochrane databases, a systematic review was conducted of studies investigating the treatment of isolated PCL injuries published until July 2020. Quality assessment was performed with the Cochrane risk of bias tool (level I), the Newcastle-Ottowa Scale (level II-III) and the National Institute of Health quality assessment tool (level IV).
To quantify the pelvic tilt (PT) in patients with symptomatic acetabular dysplasia and determine if it represents a compensatory mechanism to improve femoral head coverage, we studied a cohort of 16 patients undergoing 32 bilateral staged PAOs for acetabular dysplasia and compared this to a matched cohort of 32 patients undergoing PAO for unilateral acetabular dysplasia all with >1 year follow-up. The change in PT was determined with two validated methods, namely, the sacro-femoral-pubic (SFP) angle and the pubic symphysis to sacroiliac index (PS-SI). Despite an improvement in the lateral centre-edge and Tönnis angles to within normal limits following PAO, patients with unilateral and bilateral acetabular dysplasia have similar PT pre-operatively (8° ± 5°) and post-operatively (9° ± 5°).
