Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are contaminants that can lead to adverse health effects in aquatic organisms, including reproductive toxicity and developmental abnormalities. To assess the ecological health risk of PFAS in Pennsylvania stream surface water, we conducted a comprehensive analysis that included both measured and predicted estimates. The potential combined exposure effects of 14 individual PFAS to aquatic biota were estimated using the sum of exposure-activity ratios (ΣEARs) in 280 streams.

Objective This study aims to utilize the TriNetX database, a comprehensive global network, to improve our understanding of the frequency, demographic factors, and related comorbidities of surgical patients who develop venous thromboembolism (VTEs) events. Methods The global collaborative network in TriNetX was queried for all cases from January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2023. International Classification for Disease (ICD) diagnosis codes were used to define patient cohorts with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the upper or lower extremity or pulmonary embolism (PE).

In this multi-ancestry genome-wide association study (GWAS) and fine mapping study of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) subsites, we analysed 19,073 cases and 38,857 controls and identified 29 independent novel loci. We provide robust evidence that a 3' UTR variant in (rs78378222, T>G) confers a 40% reduction in odds of developing overall HNSCC. We further examine the gene-environment relationship of and variants demonstrating their effects act through both smoking and alcohol use.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-muscle myosin II (NMII) plays a crucial role in biological processes, but current therapeutic options are limited due to non-selective inhibitors like blebbistatin that affect both NMII and cardiac myosin II (CMII).
  • Researchers developed a series of selective NMII inhibitors, notably MT-228, which demonstrates high brain penetration and effectiveness in preclinical models for stimulant use disorder, a condition lacking FDA-approved treatments.
  • The structure of MT-228 binding to myosin II reveals its 17-fold selectivity for NMII over CMII, providing insights for future drug development and potential applications in various medical fields, including cancer and nerve regeneration.

Influenza virus nucleoprotein (NP) is one of the most conserved influenza proteins. Both NP antigen and anti-NP antibodies are used as reagents in influenza diagnostic kits, with applications in both clinical practice, and influenza zoonotic surveillance programs. Despite this, studies on the biochemical basis of NP diagnostic serology and NP epitopes are not as developed as for hemagglutinin (HA), the fast-evolving antigen which has been the critical component of current influenza vaccines.
