Introduction: Renal transplant biopsies provide insights into graft health and support decision making. The current evidence on links between biopsy scores and transplant outcomes suggests there may be numerous factors affecting biopsy scores. Here we adopt measurement science approach to investigate the sources of uncertainty in biopsy assessment and suggest techniques to improve its robustness.

Article Synopsis
  • Preimplantation biopsy helps determine organ acceptance by measuring injury, but there’s a lot of uncertainty in these measurements that can lead to poor clinical decisions.
  • In this study, researchers analyzed the reliability of biopsy scores using repeat tests on discarded kidney allografts and found significant variability based on the biopsy method used.
  • The findings suggest that relying on single-slide assessments is risky; pooling multiple assessments and improving biopsy protocols could enhance accuracy and confidence in organ evaluations.

Background: Pathology services experienced a surge in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. Digitalisation of pathology workflows can help to increase throughput, yet many existing digitalisation solutions use non-standardised workflows captured in proprietary data formats and processed by black-box software, yielding data of varying quality. This study presents the views of a UK-led expert group on the barriers to adoption and the required input of measurement science to improve current practices in digital pathology.

Article Synopsis
  • Electronic Patient Records (EPRs) are essential for research but face challenges due to inconsistent data formats and software, leading to increased manual effort in data handling.
  • A study conducted at Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2020 introduced an automated data quality reporting approach using 81 configurable tests via spreadsheets.
  • This new method significantly improved the quality of data evaluation and reporting compared to traditional mechanisms, providing standardized reports in a more user-friendly format.

Bioimaging data have significant potential for reuse, but unlocking this potential requires systematic archiving of data and metadata in public databases. We propose draft metadata guidelines to begin addressing the needs of diverse communities within light and electron microscopy. We hope this publication and the proposed Recommended Metadata for Biological Images (REMBI) will stimulate discussions about their implementation and future extension.
