Aim/introduction: Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic degenerative disease, and its main biochemical characteristic is hyperglycemia due to impaired insulin secretion, resistance to peripheral actions of insulin, or both. Hyperglycemia causes dyslipidemia and stimulates oxidative damage, leading to the main symptoms, such as fatigue and culminates in diabetic complications. Previous studies have shown that ATP-sensitive potassium channels counteract muscle fatigue and metabolic stress in healthy mouse models.

The Almadén area (Spain) is known for its high natural mercury background as well as for the anthropogenic impact due to mining activities. After the end of these activities, appropriate alternative use of the soil has to be found, and agricultural activities stand out as an environmentally-friendly and potentially profitable alternative, giving to the soil a sustainable use without risks for human or animal health according to current legislation. Experiments performed at different scales (involving hydroponics, growth in pots and lysimeters) allow recommendations to be made regarding the adequacy of cultivation of different crops for animal or human consumption before they are sown in the field.

Angiomyxolipoma is a rare tumor characterized by a proliferation of adipose tissue associated with a myxoid stroma and multiple vascular channels. To date, ten cases of angiomyxolipoma located in subcutaneous tissue, spermatic cord and subungual area have been reported in the literature. We describe the clinical and histopathologic findings of the first case of intraoral angiomyxolipoma in a 12 year-old male, as well as the utility of immunohistochemistry as a useful tool in differential diagnosis of this particular lesion with respect to other benign and malignant lesions derived from adipose tissue.

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is an acquired, autoimmune peripheral neuropathy. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic, autoimmune disease that can affect the central nervous system in about 40% of patients, with prevalence and incidence unknown in the pediatric population due to lack of multicenter studies. We report the case of a 13-year-old Mexican boy, diagnosed with CIDP at the onset of SLE, beginning with progressive muscle weakness of lower and upper limbs, without affection of the central nervous system.

A compulsion to take a drug combined with a loss of control in limiting intake is the defining feature of substance dependence or addiction, and is the conceptual framework for the criteria of substance dependence or addiction outlined by the World Health Organization and the American Psychiatric Association. However, defining exactly what constitutes loss of control and compulsive drug taking at the level of animal models is a daunting task, and it is clear that no validated animal model exists for the whole syndrome of addiction. The present discussion redefines loss of control as a narrowing of the behavioral repertoire toward drug-seeking behavior and suggests that there are many sources of reinforcement that contribute to this behavioral focus on drug seeking.
