The advent of biobanks with vast quantities of medical imaging and paired genetic measurements creates huge opportunities for a new generation of genotype-phenotype association studies. However, disentangling biological signals from the many sources of bias and artifacts remains difficult. Using diverse medical images and time-series (ie, magnetic resonance imagings [MRIs], electrocardiograms [ECGs], and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometries [DXAs]), we show how registration, both spatial and temporal, guided by domain knowledge or learned , helps uncover biological information.

Exploring In Vitro Immunomodulatory Properties of Moss Extracts.

Bryophytes are rich sources of diverse secondary metabolites with a wide range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antimicrobial effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition of extracts from two different genotypes (Serbian and Hungarian) of the axenic moss and evaluate the immunomodulatory potential of the prepared extracts in vitro. Both genotypes of moss samples were cultivated in vitro and subsequently extracted in a Soxhlet apparatus with methanol or ethyl acetate.

The therapeutic effectiveness of current neurodegenerative disease treatments is still under debate because of problems with bioavailability and a range of side effects. Fungi, which are increasingly recognized as sources of natural antioxidants and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme inhibitors, may thus serve as potent neuroprotective agents. Previous studies have associated the anti-AChE and antioxidant activities of fungi mostly with polysaccharides and phenolic compounds, while other secondary metabolites such as polyamines (PAs) have been neglected.
