Building a functional national One Health platform: the case of Tanzania.

Background: The USAID Preparedness and Response (P&R) project's publication on Multisectoral Coordination that Works identified five dimensions most critical to creating effective and sustainable One Health platforms: political commitment, institutional structure, management and coordination capacity, technical and financial resources, and joint planning and implementation. This case study describes Tanzania experience in using these dimensions to establish a functional One Health platform. The main objective of this case study was to document the process of institutionalizing the One Health approach in Tanzania.

Institutionalizing One Health: From Assessment to Action.

A One Health approach is critical to strengthening health security at country, regional, and global levels. However, operationally its uptake remains limited. Recent momentum in assessing capacity to effectively prevent, detect, and respond to disease threats has resulted in identification of gaps that require dedicated action.

Strain-stiffening gels based on latent crosslinking.

Gels represent an increasingly important class of soft materials with applications ranging from regenerative medicine to commodity materials. However, gels typically exhibit relative mechanical weakness, which worsens under repeated strain. Here we report a new class of responsive gels with latent crosslinking moieties that exhibit strain-stiffening behavior.

Trends in genetics--before the molecular era.

Molecular techniques and biochemical questions came to dominate genetic research during the later half of the 1900th century. This does not mean that earlier achievements have lost their importance. In this review the trends in classic genetics are followed from the beginning in 1900 until the molecular aspects took over, and it is shown how they form the basis for many trains of thought in present day genetics.

Old and new ideas about genes and behaviour.

Genetic factors have long been recognized as contributors to variantion in behaviour both within the normal span and as mental diseases. The first attempts to make behaviour the subject of scientific genetic studies used likeness between twins and other relatives to confirm heredity. Later heritability has been used as a quantitative estimate of the genetic part of the variance.
