Chromosome 4 Duplication Associated with Strabismus Leads to Gene Expression Changes in iPSC-Derived Cortical Neurons.

Background/objectives: Strabismus is the most common ocular disorder of childhood. Three rare, recurrent genetic duplications have been associated with both esotropia and exotropia, but the mechanisms by which they contribute to strabismus are unknown. This work aims to investigate the mechanisms of the smallest of the three, a 23 kb duplication on chromosome 4 (hg38|4:25,554,985-25,578,843).

Genome Wide and Rare Variant Association Studies of Amblyopia in the All of Us Research Program.

Objective: Amblyopia is characterized by decreased visual acuity due to abnormal visual experience during development. It affects approximately three percent of the population and is associated with abnormal development of the visual cortex. Despite treatment, many patients have residual visual acuity deficits.

Access to non-physician led Exercise Stress Echocardiography reduces wait times and improves consumer engagement.

The performing of non-physician led exercise stress testing with and without echocardiography has shown similar diagnostic utility and safety as physician led models. While diagnostic accuracy and relative safety have been the focus of previous research, the current study aims to demonstrate efficiencies not previously reported such as reduction in wait times for testing and improved service attendance. A non-physician led exercise stress echocardiography (ESE) service was implemented on 01/01/2018, prior to this all tests were performed under a physician led model.

Blood culture bottle shortage mitigation efforts: analysis of impact on ordering and patient impact.

Objective Design: In June of 2024, Becton Dickinson experienced a blood culture bottle shortage for their BACTEC system, forcing health systems to reduce usage or risk exhausting their supply. Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) in Richmond, VA decided that it was necessary to implement austerity measures to preserve the blood culture bottle supply.

Setting: VCUHS includes a main campus in Richmond, VA as well as two affiliate hospitals in South Hill, VA (Community Memorial Hospital (CMH)) and Tappahannock Hospital in Tappahannock, VA.

Hand movements frequently occur with speech. The extent to which the memories that guide co-speech hand movements are tied to the speech they occur with is unclear. Here, we paired the acquisition of a new hand movement with speech.
