A global database of nitrogen and phosphorus excretion rates of aquatic animals.

Animals can be important in modulating ecosystem-level nutrient cycling, although their importance varies greatly among species and ecosystems. Nutrient cycling rates of individual animals represent valuable data for testing the predictions of important frameworks such as the Metabolic Theory of Ecology (MTE) and ecological stoichiometry (ES). They also represent an important set of functional traits that may reflect both environmental and phylogenetic influences.

Leg injuries and wound repair among cosmetid harvestmen (Arachnida, Opiliones, Laniatores).

Previous studies of leg injuries in harvestmen have focused on the fitness consequences for individuals that use autospasy (voluntary detachment of the leg) as a secondary defense mechanism. Leg damage among non-autotomizing species of laniatorean harvestmen has not been investigated. Under laboratory conditions, we damaged femur IV of Cynorta marginalis and observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the changes in these wounds over ten days.

Elevated activated partial thromboplastin time does not correlate with heparin rebound following cardiac surgery.

Purpose: Exposure to cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with postoperative coagulopathy and hemorrhage. Recent literature indicates that heparin rebound occurs almost universally following cardiac surgery. We conducted this pilot study to evaluate if the presence of residual circulating heparin following cardiac surgery can be diagnosed by elevation of activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT).

[Frey syndrome].

Aims: The incidence of Frey's syndrome after parotidectomy as cited in the literature varies distinctively. Strategies for successful treatment are also assessed differently.

Patients: Between 1980 and 1994 a total of 372 parotidectomies were performed in 364 patients at the Bochum University Hospital.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with extensive miliary metastases: a case report.

We report the course of a 19-year-old female who presented with a 13-year history of an occipital dermal tumor. Only five weeks after excision, the patient succumbed to cerebral dysregulation due to extensive miliary cerebral, hepatic, and pulmonary metastasis. The histologic features of the surgical specimen and the autopsy material differed suspiciously: a peculiar malignant progression of the tumor seemed to have occurred within five weeks.
