Selenium (Se) deficiency among populations in Ethiopia is consistent with low concentrations of Se in soil and crops that could be addressed partly by Se-enriched fertilisers. This study examines the disease burden of Se deficiency in Ethiopia and evaluates the cost-effectiveness of Se agronomic biofortification. A disability-adjusted life years (DALY) framework was used, considering goiter, anaemia, and cognitive dysfunction among children and women.

Aims: To assess and compare the psychometric properties and acceptability of four diabetes-specific quality of life (QoL) scales among adults with Type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Methods: Adults (≥18 years) with T2D living in the United Kingdom (n = 1465) or Australia (n = 248) completed a cross-sectional, online survey including the following: ADDQoL, DCP, DIDP and Diabetes QoL-Q (presented in randomised order), followed by rating scales to assess clarity, relevance, ease of completion, length and comprehensiveness of each scale. Demographic, clinical and psychosocial characteristics were collected.

Africa's potential for scientific research is not yet being realized, for various reasons including a lack of researchers in many fields and insufficient funding. Strengthened research capacity through doctoral training programmes in higher education institutes (HEIs) in Africa, to include collaboration with national, regional and international research institutions, can facilitate self-reliant and sustainable research to support socio-economic development. In 2012, the Royal Society and the UK's Department for International Development (now the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) launched the Africa Capacity Building Initiative (ACBI) Doctoral Training Network which aimed to strengthen research capacity and training across sub-Saharan Africa.

Article Synopsis
  • Micronutrient deficiencies, especially in zinc and iron, are common in sub-Saharan Africa due to low dietary intake, with wheat often lacking these nutrients.
  • The study involved developing Malawian wheat introgression lines that were tested for higher concentrations of zinc and iron in low-nutrient soils, revealing that 98% of these lines had better zinc levels compared to established varieties.
  • Among these lines, 23% achieved both high yields and increased grain zinc, with some also showing improvements in iron, indicating the potential for enhanced nutritional quality in wheat for regions affected by MNDs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how experiencing hypoglycemia affects daily life in adults with type 1 and insulin-treated type 2 diabetes using the Hypo-METRICS app over 70 days.
  • Participants reported their hypoglycemia experiences through daily check-ins while wearing a glucose sensor that provided data without their knowledge.
  • Results indicated that self-reported hypoglycemia negatively impacted energy, mood, cognitive function, and sleep quality, while sensor-detected hypoglycemia alone did not show these associations.
