Infectious Risk in Pediatric Emergency Departments in Italy: A Survey by the Italian Society for Pediatric Emergency and Urgent Medicine (SIMEUP) on Available Preventive and Diagnostic Tools.

The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance of preparedness in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, especially in Emergency Departments (EDs), where initial patient assessments and triage occur. This study aims to evaluate the current practices and available tools for infection control in Pediatric EDs across Italy, focusing on the differences between various hospital types and regional settings. A cross-sectional national survey was conducted in February 2022, targeting healthcare workers in Pediatric EDs across Italy.

Iron deficiency anemia in newly diagnosed celiac disease in children.

Background: Celiac disease (CD) in children may occur with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations: anemia is the most frequent extraintestinal manifestation, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the common presentation. In our study we aimed to assess IDA condition in a large cohort of pediatric patients with newly diagnosed CD.

Methods: Our study includes a cohort of 518 children (340 females and 178 males), 6 months-18 years old, joined between January 1990 and January 2013.

Congenital hypothyroidism in Calabria: epidemiological and clinical aspects.

Neonatal screening of congenital hypothyroidism (CH), carried out on all newborns 3rd -5th day of life, has a very important priority because the incidence of this disease is the highest of all congenital diseases involving brain damage which can be preventable with early specific treatment. In recent years, the values of TSH that were considered pathological were modified and the TSH cut-off, the title of hormone to be taken as the limit of significance for determining a subject suffering from CH, has been progressively lowered. In Calabria the introduction of the new value of TSH cut-off on blood spot, has led to a considerable increase in the frequency of CH, particularly in the case of the thyroid in situ normal ultrasound and of the diagnosis of transitional forms of CH.

A planar second-order DC SQUID gradiometer.

In this work we describe a DC SQUID gradiometer, sensitive to the second spatial derivative of the magnetic field. The sensitive area of the gradiometer is the inductive body of the DC SQUID itself. The isoflux line distribution generated by a dipolar source, obtained by performing magnetic measurements with an array of such detectors, is relatively complicated, but its localisation capability is similar to that one usually achieves with axial detector arrays.
