Current cardiac surgery has evolved to include hybrid and minimally invasive settings. In parallel, less invasive techniques have been extended to complex clinical scenarios and may prove even more beneficial in higher-risk patients. However, comorbidities and challenging anatomy still represent limitations to widespread application of this philosophy.

Adrenal dysfunction due to over-the-counter (OTC) health supplements containing unlabeled glucocorticoids has been previously reported. Here, we present a case series of 12 patients at an urban safety net medical center evaluated by endocrinology for iatrogenic adrenal dysfunction, Cushing syndrome (CS) and/or adrenal insufficiency (AI), associated with use of OTC arthritis supplements surreptitiously containing glucocorticoids. There were 12 patients using OTC arthritis supplements (Artri King [n = 8], Ardosons [n = 3], Ajo Rey [n = 1]) included.

Background: Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, or type 2 diabetes, is one of the diseases of greatest concern worldwide, and research into natural compounds that are capable of regulating glycemia and insulin resistance is therefore gaining importance. In the preclinical stages, is considered a promising in vivo model for research into this disease. Most studies have been carried out using mutant strains and observing changes in their phenotype rather than directly measuring the effects within the worms.

Both rigid plastics and soft hydrogels find ample applications in engineering and medicine but bear their own disadvantages that limit their broader applications. Bonding these mechanically dissimilar materials may resolve these limitations, preserve their advantages, and offer new opportunities as biointerfaces. Here, a robust adhesion strategy is proposed to integrate highly entangled tough hydrogels and diverse plastics with high interfacial adhesion energy and strength.
