Background: Prophylactic antibiotics are often used in septoplasty. However, the number of controlled studies, especially randomized double blind placebo controlled studies on the effect of antibiotics in septum surgery, is very low. The PURPOSE OF THE PRESENT STUDY was to investigate if intravenous cefuroxime given as preoperative antimicrobial prophylaxis 30 minutes prior to surgery diminishes the risk of infection after septoplasty during the first postoperative month among patients with normal immune function.

Background: To evaluate the long-term surgical outcome(s) in patients who have undergone canal-wall-down operation with mastoid and epitympanic obliteration using autologous cortical bone chips, bone pate and meatally-based musculoperiosteal flap technique.
Method: Retrospective evaluation of seventy patients operated during 1986-1991 due to a cholesteatoma. An otomicroscopy was performed to evaluate the postoperative outer ear canal configuration with a modified Likert scale (1 - 4).
Background: The efficacy and tolerability of oral telithromycin 800 mg once daily for 5 vs. 10 days were assessed in patients with acute maxillary sinusitis (AMS).
Methods: Adults (n = 341) with confirmed AMS diagnosed on clinical signs and symptoms and sinus X-ray showing total opacity or air-fluid level were randomized to receive oral telithromycin for 5 days (followed by placebo for 5 days; n = 170) or 10 days (n = 171).
