Agricultural food waste and by-products could provide high-value compounds that positively affect human and environmental health, thus representing promising ingredients for cosmeceutical products. This study explores the biological activities of tomato skin (HP) and pomegranate peel (PPE) extracts on oral mucosa to evaluate their possible use in mouthwashes. The biological activities of the extracts and the mouthwash (MW) containing them were evaluated in Human Primary Gingival Epithelial cells (HGECs).

The present work focuses on one of the possible target mechanisms of action of the anionic antimicrobial peptide β-lg derived from trypsin hydrolysis of β-lactoglobulin. After confirmation of bactericidal activity against a pathogenic Gram(+) strain and demonstration of the innocuousness on a eukaryotic cell line, we investigated the interaction of β-lg with monolayers and bilayers of dpPC and dpPC:dpPG as model membranes of eukaryotic and bacterial membranes, respectively. In monolayers, compared to zwitterionic dpPC, in the negatively charged dpPC-dpPG, β-lg injected into the subphase penetrated up to higher surface pressures and showed greater extents of penetration with increasing concentration in the subphase.

Monoterpenes (MTs), the major constituents of plant essential oils, cover a broad spectrum of biological activities through their interaction with biomembranes. MTs are highly hydrophobic substances with a net electrical dipole, but are not clearly amphipathic. As a result, they aggregate at increasing concentrations in aqueous media, and in membrane environments their behavior changes from dynamics modulators to disruptors.

Dietary intervention is considered a safe preventive strategy to slow down aging. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effects of a commercially available supplement and six simpler formulations against DNA damage in 3D human keratinocytes. The ingredients used are well known and were combined into various formulations to test their potential anti-aging properties.
