This paper explores the application of positionality and reflexivity drawing on the experience of a British Minority Ethnic (BME) group senior nurse researching nurses with the same ethnic heritage in an IPA study. It explores how using IPA informed reflexivity and positionality as a researcher who shared the same ethnicity with the research participants. The IPA study allowed for the exploration of Internationally Educated Nurses' (IENs) perspectives on their integration into British healthcare and their navigation of career progression.

Aims: (1) Identify and characterise the nursing contribution to impact case studies submitted to Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 across all Units of Assessment and compare this to those submitted to REF 2014; (2) Identify and characterise those impact case studies of relevance to nursing that did not include a nurse in the research team; (3) Compare the characteristics of impact case studies identified in Aim 2 with those that did include a nurse in the research team.

Design: Desk-based analysis of REF2021 published data.

Methods: We searched the REF2021 impact database with the term nurs* then sorted case studies into categories representing the involvement of nurses on the research team.

Article Synopsis
  • Prioritizing lung-protective ventilation has been shown to significantly reduce mortality in neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), despite limited specific evidence for CDH approaches.
  • Emerging adult data on ventilator-induced lung injury provides insights that may help improve mechanical ventilation management for CDH patients.
  • Key findings stress the importance of balancing positive end-expiratory pressure to avoid lung collapse while preventing damage from over-inflation, with ongoing trials evaluating high-frequency ventilation methods for better outcomes in CDH cases.

Nursing students' integration of theoretical knowledge and practical abilities is facilitated by their practice of nursing skills in a clinical environment. A key role of preceptors is to assess the learning goals that nursing students must meet while participating in clinical practice. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to explore the current evidence in relation to competency assessment and assessment approaches, and the willingness of preceptors for assessing nursing students' competency in a clinical setting.
