Controlling lake eutrophication is a challenge. A case-specific diagnostics driven approach is recommended that will guide to a suite of measures most promising in restoration of eutrophic lakes as exemplified by the case of the shallow lake Groote Melanen, The Netherlands. A lake system analysis identified external and internal nutrient load as main reasons for poor water quality and reoccurring cyanobacterial blooms in the lake.

With the introduction of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI), more women with cystic fibrosis (CF) are likely to grow families. Hence, an understanding long-term safety and effects of CFTR modulators on fertile women and children while monitoring their concentrations is crucial. Here, we report on the development of an improved LC-MS/MS methodology to measure ETI concentrations in maternal and child blood and breastmilk, applied in one case of successful pregnancy of a 30-year-old woman with CF (F508del/R334W).

Article Synopsis
  • Mucus plugging and persistent inflammation in cystic fibrosis (CF) contribute to severe lung disease and limitations in physical activity, leading to high morbidity and mortality.
  • Investigating the lipid mediator resolvin (Rv) D1 revealed its potential to mitigate mucus-related inflammation, showing promise for improving lung health and exercise capability in CF.
  • RvD1 decreased harmful immune responses and inflammatory markers in both human airway models and CF-like mice, suggesting its therapeutic potential in alleviating CF symptoms and enhancing physical activity.

The eutrophic Bouvigne pond (Breda, The Netherlands) regularly suffers from cyanobacterial blooms. To improve the water quality, the external nutrient loading and the nutrient release from the pond sediment have to be reduced. An enclosure experiment was performed in the pond between March 9 and July 29, 2020 to compare the efficiency of dredging, addition of the lanthanum-modified bentonite clay Phoslock® (LMB), the aluminum-modified zeolite Aqual-P™ (AMZ) and FeCl to mitigate nutrient release from the sediment.

The COVID-19 pandemics has made sparkly evident the importance of acute inflammation and its timely resolution to protect humans from pathogenic viruses while sparing them from collateral damages due to an uncontrolled immune response. It is clear now that resolution of inflammation is an active process regulated by endogenous specialized proresolving lipid mediators (SPM) biosynthesized from essential polyunsaturated fatty acids. Accruing evidence indicates that SPM are produced during viral infections and play key roles in controlling the magnitude and duration of the inflammatory response and in regulating adaptive immunity.
