Background: There is a global need for synthetic speech development in multiple languages and dialects, as many children who cannot communicate using their natural voice struggle to find synthetic voices on high-technology devices that match their age, social and linguistic background.

Aims: To document multiple stakeholders' perspectives surrounding the quality, acceptability and utility of newly created synthetic speech in three under-resourced South African languages, namely South African English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.

Many shotgun proteomics experiments are negatively influenced by highly abundant proteins, such as those measuring residual host cell proteins (HCP) amidst highly abundant recombinant biotherapeutic or plasma proteins amidst albumin and immunoglobulins. While western blotting and ELISAs can reveal the presence of specific low abundance proteins from highly abundant background proteins, mass spectrometry approaches are required to define the low abundance protein composition in these scenarios. The challenge in detecting low abundance proteins in a high protein background by standard shotgun approaches is that spectra are often not triggered on their peptides in data dependent acquisition methods but rather on the highly abundant background peptides.

The approach to postmortem computed tomography (CT) differs significantly from that of diagnostic CT in living patients. Elimination of artifacts such as noise and beam hardening as well as optimization of tissue contrast requires alteration of exposure parameters from protocols designed to limit radiation dose in children. Multiple scans may be performed, and detailed post-processing can be used to enhance subtle findings such as small intracranial extra axial collections and non-displaced fractures.

It is well-known that children with expressive communication difficulties have the right to communicate, but they should also have the right to do so in whichever language they choose, with a voice that closely matches their age, gender, and dialect. This study aimed to develop naturalistic synthetic child speech, matching the vocal identity of three children with expressive communication difficulties, using Tacotron 2, for three under-resourced South African languages, namely South African English (SAE), Afrikaans, and isiXhosa. Due to the scarcity of child speech corpora, 2 hours of child speech data per child was collected from three 11- to 12-year-old children.
