α2-macroglobulin (α2M) is an acute-phase protein released upon challenges like cardiac hypertrophy and infarction. α2M signals via the low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP-1) and may induce stem cell activation. In the present study, the effects of α2M on vasculogenesis/angiogenesis and underlying signaling cascades were investigated in mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells.

Oral and written instruction of oral hygiene: a randomized trial.

Background: This randomized, evaluator-masked, controlled study evaluates the effectiveness of oral in contrast to written instruction of oral hygiene.

Methods: Eighty-three students without clinical signs of periodontitis were randomly assigned to either a control group or one of three experimental conditions: 1) written instruction, 2) standardized oral instruction, or 3) individualized oral instruction. Plaque and bleeding indices were assessed to analyze intervention effects on oral health and oral hygiene skills.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a developmental neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics as well as psychiatric comorbidities. Disturbances of the fronto-striatal-thalamic pathways responsible for motor control and impulse inhibition have been previously described in other studies. Although differences in motor performance are well recognized, imaging data elucidating the neuronal correlates are scarce.
