There is a considerable interest in developing new analytical tools to fight the illicit trafficking of heritage goods and particularly of easel paintings, whose high market values attract an ever-increasing volume of criminal activities. The objective is to combat the illicit traffic of smuggled or forged paintworks and to prevent the acquisition of fakes or looted artefacts in public collections. Authentication can be addressed using various investigation techniques, such as absolute dating, materials characterization, alteration phenomena, etc.

Unlabelled: Holocene climate variability is punctuated by episodic climatic events such as the Little Ice Age (LIA) predating the industrial-era warming. Their dating and forcing mechanisms have however remained controversial. Even more crucially, it is uncertain whether earlier events represent climatic regimes similar to the LIA.

The annual C data in tree rings is an outstanding proxy for uncovering extreme solar energetic particle (SEP) events in the past. Signatures of extreme SEP events have been reported in 774/775 CE, 992/993 CE, and ∼660 BCE. Here, we report another rapid increase of C concentration in tree rings from California, Switzerland, and Finland around 5410 BCE.

Article Synopsis
  • Black carbon (BC) particles are warming the climate by heating the atmosphere and reducing the reflectivity of snow and ice surfaces.
  • Long-term BC deposition data from western Arctic Russia show a consistent increase in BC fluxes from 1800 to 2014, with about 70% of the BC sourced from biomass and significant contributions from fossil fuels peaking between 1960-1990.
  • The study suggests the need to update anthropogenic BC emission inventories for Russia, as current estimates may underestimate emissions and misrepresent trends, which is crucial for developing effective climate policies.

Syphilis is a globally re-emerging disease, which has marked European history with a devastating epidemic at the end of the 15 century. Together with non-venereal treponemal diseases, like bejel and yaws, which are found today in subtropical and tropical regions, it currently poses a substantial health threat worldwide. The origins and spread of treponemal diseases remain unresolved, including syphilis' potential introduction into Europe from the Americas.
