Small round structured virus associated with an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis in Chiba, Japan.

In an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis which originated in a restaurant in Chiba, Japan, in December, 1987, small round structured virus (SRSV) particles were observed by electron microscopy in 14 of 16 stool specimens from patients. The particles were 30 to 35 nm in diameter, possessed amorphous surface structure surrounded by fine projections and had a buoyant density of 1.36 to 1.

Occurrence of rickettsiosis of spotted fever group in Chiba Prefecture of Japan.

Acute- and convalescent-phase sera were obtained from a patient with suspected tsutsugamushi disease in July 1987, in Amatsukominato located in the southeastern area of Chiba Prefecture, and showed negative serologic reactions with Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, while the convalescent-phase serum reacted positively with R. montana and a Japanese isolate of spotted fever group rickettsia at IgM and IgG titers of 1:320 and 1:640, respectively, in the indirect immunofluorescence test. These findings showed that a rickettsiosis of the spotted fever group occurred also in Chiba Prefecture like in the southeastern areas of Shikoku and Kyushu islands of Japan.

Inability of Japanese rubella vaccines to induce antibody response in rabbits is due to growth restriction at 39 degrees C.

We have compared the kinetic growth patterns of To-336, MEQ11, KRT, and SK2 rubella vaccine strains licensed in Japan at 37 degrees and 39 degrees C with those of progenitor wild strains of rubella virus. The growth of vaccine strains was depressed at 39 degrees C to a level about 3 log10 lower than that at 37 degrees C. The difference in virus titer attained by wild strains at 37 degrees and 39 degrees C was less than tenfold.
