Prevalence of substance use among students in a Kenyan University: a preliminary report.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and pattern of substance use among an undergraduate population in a Kenyan university.

Design: Cross-sectional survey, cluster sampling of classrooms, self-administered questionnaires.

Setting: Private international university in Nairobi province, Kenya.

Antihypertensive effect of the clerodane diterpene ajugarin I on experimentally hypertensive rats.

Anti-hypertensive studies on ajugarin I, a representative example of a range of biologically active clerodane diterpenes was carried out. Administration of ajugarin I at 10 mg/1 in the drinking water of experimentally hypertensive rats, lowered their blood pressure from 165.00 +/- 1.

Morphological observations on superficial medullary CO2--chemosensitive areas.

Physiological investigations have indicated that the ventrolateral surface of the medulla oblongata is involved in the chemical drive to respiration. In this investigation, light and electron microscopic investigations of the 3 chemosensitive regions reveal the following. (1) Evaginations of the ventral surface abut the overlying pia mater thereby delimiting discrete compartments; invaginations of the surface delimit wide cisternae lined with basement membrane.

Myocardial capillary density in hypertensive rats.

The density of myocardial capillaries was determined in spontaneous hypertensive (SHR) and age-matched normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Standard procedures were used to determine the systolic blood pressure of the animals. Specimens for light microscopic studies were sampled from the middle portion of the left ventricular free wall of in situ K+-arrested, glutaraldehyde-fixed hearts.
