Background: The dearth of health personnel in low income countries has attracted global attention. Ways as to how health care services can be delivered in a more efficient and effective way using available health personnel are being explored. Task-sharing expands the responsibilities of low-cadre health workers and allows them to share these responsibilities with highly qualified health care providers in an effort to best utilize available human resources.

Background: Pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early detection and treatment have been instrumental in reducing case fatality in high-income countries. To achieve this in a low-income country, like Nigeria, community health workers who man primary health centres must have adequate knowledge and skills to identify and provide emergency care for women with pre-eclampsia.

Objectives: To explore sociodemographic determinants of perceived quality of antenatal care (ANC) at the primary care level.

Methods: A survey of 452 randomly selected pregnant women accessing antenatal care at the primary healthcare facilities in Sagamu Local Government Area (LGA) of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria. The relationships between 13 sociodemographic characteristics of women and their overall perception of the quality of care (expressed by their level of overall satisfaction) were examined through bivariate analyses, by computing odds ratio at 95% confidence interval.
