Malaria Diagnosis at the Pediatric Emergency Unit of a Teaching Hospital in Makurdi, North Central Nigeria.

Background: Globally, there were 241 million cases of malaria in 2020, with an estimated 627,000 deaths with Nigeria accounting for 27% of the global malaria cases. In sub-Saharan Africa, testing is low with only 28% of children with a fever receiving medical advice or a rapid diagnostic test in 2021. In Nigeria, there are documented reports of over-diagnosis and over-treatment of malaria in children.

Improving the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis using line probe assay and determining the factors associated with the disease in children in Jos, Nigeria.

Introduction: Diagnosing tuberculosis (TB), including pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), in children remains a challenge, partly due to its paucibacillary nature in young children. Data on the use of line probe assay (LPA), on gastric and sputum samples, for diagnosing PTB in children are scarce. We determined the proportion of samples positive for (MTB) by smear microscopy (SM) and LPA in presumptive PTB cases as well as the factors associated with PTB confirmed by LPA, in children in Jos, Nigeria.

Management and Outcome of a Case of Osteogenesis Imperfecta in Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, North-Central Nigeria.

Osteogenesis Imperfecta is a genetic disorder of the connective tissue leading to generalised osteoporosis, fragility of the skeletal system and susceptibility to fractures of the long bones and compression of the vertebrae from mild or inconsequential trauma. It is one of the rare diseases known to mankind. It has no definitive cure and treatment is essentially supportive.

Background: Septic arthritis is a relatively common condition in the paediatric population. It is both a medical and a surgical emergency with potential high morbidity. This disabling disease requires early diagnosis and prompt management for optimal outcome.

Changes in the haematological parameters of HIV-1 infected children at 6 and 12 months of antiretroviral therapy in a large clinic cohort, North-Central Nigeria.

Background: Prior to commencing antiretroviral therapy (ART), haematological abnormalities are a common occurrence in individuals diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In the course of receiving ART, these abnormalities usually improve. We determined the prevalence of haematological abnormalities in children diagnosed with HIV-1 and the changes in haematological parameters that occur after 6 and 12 months of being on ART.
