Aim: To evaluate the efficiency and safety of using raltegravir (RAL) twice daily in conjunction with a once-daily fixed dose combination of abacavir (ABC)/lamivudine (3TC) in patients with HIV infection and active tuberculosis who have not previously received antiretroviral therapy (ART) and have taken rifabutin as antituberculosis therapy (ATT).
Subjects And Methods: The efficiency of ART was evaluated in 28 patients from a change in HIV RNA levels and from an increase in CD4+ lymphocyte counts during 48-week treatment that had been completed by 15 (53.6%) patients.

Five cases of irreversible mental disorders (dementia) are reported in patients with immunodeficiency as the consequence of HIV-infection. Such cases comprise 4.3% of the patients infected by HIV at the stage of AIDS.

For the first time a nosocomial focus of HIV infection was established. Out of 83,000 inhabitants of the Kalmyck ASSR who underwent planned examination in the course of epidemiological investigation, 65 cases of HIV infection were detected and all of them were traced to the focus of hospital infection (56 children and 9 adults: 1 man and 8 women; of these, 7 women contacted the infection from their infected children in the process of breast feeding). The children were infected during their stay in two hospitals of Elista where they received multiple intravenous and intramuscular injections.

Serological screening for HIV infection revealed the presence of antibodies to HIV in 26 Soviet citizens and 200 foreigners from 33 countries. Among the Soviet citizens, the risk factors were homosexual relations with homosexual partners (3 men), homosexual and heterosexual relations with partners found to be HIV carriers (5 men and 7 women respectively), as well as sexual relations with foreigners not examined for the presence of HIV infection (4 women); besides, 5 persons were infected as the result of the transfusion of donor blood containing antibodies to HIV and 1 child was born of a mother with antibodies to HIV.
