Article Synopsis
  • Group B Streptococcus (GBS) can asymptomatically colonize the vagina of up to 40% of pregnant women, posing risks for serious infections in newborns during delivery.
  • A study analyzed vaginal samples from 93 pregnant women to explore the relationship between vaginal microbial community composition and GBS colonization at 24 and 36 weeks of gestation.
  • Findings indicated that women persistently colonized with GBS showed a significant increase in specific bacterial abundance while experiencing a decrease in others, highlighting the need for further research on how these microbial communities interact with GBS during pregnancy.

Background: Bariatric surgery is internationally performed as a treatment option in obesity to achieve significant and sustained weight loss. There is an increasing number of women having pregnancies after bariatric surgery with mixed maternal and fetal outcomes, with a limited number of large, matched studies.

Objective: This study aimed to describe the type of prepregnancy bariatric surgery, analyze maternal, pregnancy, and offspring outcomes relative to matched women, and assess the impact of prepregnancy bariatric surgery on fetal growth, particularly the proportions of small for gestational age and large for gestational age infants.

Aims/hypothesis: Pregnant women are advised to consume a minimum of 175 g per day of carbohydrate to meet maternal and fetal brain glucose requirements. This recommendation comes from a theoretical calculation of carbohydrate requirements in pregnancy, rather than from clinical data. This study aimed to determine whether fasting maternal ketone levels are associated with habitual carbohydrate intake in a subset of participants of the Study of PRobiotics IN Gestational diabetes (SPRING) randomised controlled trial.
