Perceptions and attitudes about antibiotic resistance in the general public and general practitioners in France.

Background: During the last 20 years, France has taken important steps to tackle antibiotic resistance. These include national awareness campaigns for the general public, and supporting changes in terms of antibiotic prescription for healthcare practitioners. To prepare the upcoming 2022/2023 campaign, we conducted two surveys to assess (1) the general public's knowledge, attitudes and behaviours regarding antibiotics and (2) the perceptions and practices of general practitioners (GPs).

Consumption of alcohol-based hand rub in French nursing homes: results from a nationwide survey, 2018-2019.

This study assessed the hand hygiene performance in French nursing homes using the consumption of alcohol-based hand rubs (AHRs) as a surrogate. Nursing homes from the 17 French regions were contacted to collect their AHR consumption and occupancy in 2018 and 2019. A total of 1290 nursing homes from 15 French regions participated in the survey.

Efficiency of different control measures for preventing carbapenemase-producing enterobacteria and glycopeptide-resistant outbreaks: a 6-year prospective study in a French multihospital institution, January 2010 to December 2015.

An infection control programme was implemented in a 21,000-bed multihospital institution for controlling the spread of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) and glycopeptide-resistant (GRE), classified as 'emergent extensively drug-resistant bacteria' (eXDR) in France. We evaluated factors associated with outbreaks occurrence (n = 103), which followed 901 eXDR introductions (index case followed or not by secondary cases) from 2010 to 2015. In univariate analysis, knowing that patients had been hospitalised abroad, bacterial species (GRE vs CPE, as well as the CPE compared with the other Enterobacteriaceae species) and type of measures implemented within the first 2 days of hospitalisation were associated with outbreaks occurrence, but not the type of wards where carriers were hospitalised, nor the eXDR colonisation or infection status.

Evaluation of excreta management in a large French multi-hospital institution.

Background: Excreta are a major source of multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae including strains that produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL). The increase of ESBL incidence in Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) hospitals prompted an evaluation of the equipment and practices used to dispose of excreta.

Aim: To evaluate the use of equipment for the management of excreta and to review practices of healthcare workers in their disposal.
