RNA viruses have evolved numerous strategies to overcome host resistance and immunity, including the use of multifunctional proteases that not only cleave viral polyproteins during virus replication but also deubiquitinate cellular proteins to suppress ubiquitin (Ub)-mediated antiviral mechanisms. Here, we report an approach to attenuate the infection of Arabidopsis thaliana by Turnip Yellow Mosaic Virus (TYMV) by suppressing the polyprotein cleavage and deubiquitination activities of the TYMV protease (PRO). Performing selections using a library of phage-displayed Ub variants (UbVs) for binding to recombinant PRO yielded several UbVs that bound the viral protease with nanomolar affinities and blocked its function.

Phytoglobin1 promotes Arabidopsis somatic embryogenesis through the mediation of ethylene and the ERFVII HRE2. Generation of somatic embryos in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) is a two-step process, encompassing an induction phase where embryogenic tissue (ET) is formed followed by a developmental phase encouraging the growth of the embryos. Using previously characterized transgenic lines dysregulating the class 1 Phytoglobin (Pgb1) we show that suppression of Pgb1 decreases somatic embryogenesis (SE).

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare histiocytic neoplastic disorder that mainly affects the skin and bones, with dermatological manifestations that can be easily confused with other dermatological conditions, such as seborrheic eczema, psoriasis, lesions of herpes simplex virus infection, fungal infection, lichen planus, and cutaneous lymphomas. This case report describes an eight-month-old infant who, at a child health appointment, presented with progressive erythematous papulovesicular lesions, initially treated with hygiene measures (skin hydration and hygiene) and mupirocin ointment, but which persisted and worsened, leading to a skin biopsy. The diagnosis of self-limiting congenital histiocytosis was confirmed, and the child was referred to the Portuguese Oncology Institute.

Persistent breast cancer treatment-related pain affects up to 40% of patients, decreasing their quality of life (QoL). While current research typically utilizes correlation and regression analysis to identify biopsychosocial phenotypes contributing to this pain, this study employs cluster analysis to identify qualitatively different phenotypes based on somatosensory and psychosocial characteristics both before and one week post-breast cancer surgery. Further, it investigates how these phenotypes are related to pain intensity one year post-surgery and examines the evolution of phenotype membership from pre- to post-surgery.
