This work presents a comprehensive study of electroabsorption in CdSe colloidal quantum dots, nanorods, and nanoplatelets. We experimentally demonstrate that the exposure of the nanoplatelets to a dc electric field leads to strong broadening of their lowest-energy heavy-hole absorption band and drastically reduces the absorption efficiency within the band. These are results of the quantum-confined Stark and Franz–Keldysh effects.

Imide capture of a C-terminal peptidylazide with a side-chain thioacid derivative of an N-terminally protected aspartyl peptide leads to the formation of an imide bond bringing the two peptide ends into close proximity. Unmasking of the N(α) protecting group and intramolecular acyl migration results in the formation of a native peptide bond to asparagine.

Benzylidenemalononitrile (BMN) tyrphostins are well known as potent tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Moreover, in recent years it has been recognized that members of the tyrphostin family possess additional biological activities independent of their ability to inhibit protein tyrosine kinases. In this study, we examined the relationship between the structure of 49 BMNs and related compounds, and their capacity to induce heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) gene expression in U937 human monocytic cells, to activate upstream signaling pathways and to protect cells against menadione-induced oxidative stress.

Rotation of a single dust granule (spin) is investigated experimentally in a stratified glow discharge. We employ the technique of measurement of the angular velocity, which is based on coordinate tracing of the light scattered by a hollow transparent particle. The angular velocity measured in the experiment is about 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than observed in previous experiments.
