Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main cause of cervical cancer and other cancers such as anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. The prevention screening and treatment of cervical cancer has remained one of the top priorities of the World Health Organization (WHO). In 2020, the WHO came up with the 90-70-90 strategy aimed at eliminating cervical cancers as a public health problem by the year 2030.

Background: The limited understanding of factors influencing the disease progression of oral lichen planus (OLP) poses challenges in delivering effective and personalised treatment for this condition, known to increase the risk of oral cancer and adversely impact patient quality of life.

Objective: This study aimed to systematically identify clinical predictors of disease severity in OLP patients.

Methods: This cross-sectional and single-site prospective study was conducted between December 2021 and February 2024 in the Departments of Oral Medicine and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Anticholinergic burden (ACB) from medications has been associated with adverse outcomes in older adults. The aim was to conduct a non-randomized feasibility study of an intervention to reduce the anticholinergic burden in older patients (REGENERATE) to inform a subsequent definitive trial. The development and evaluation of an ACB reduction intervention was guided by the Medical Research Council framework.

Visual estimates of cover are widely used among ecologists, from describing vegetation communities to tracking and monitoring species' abundance. However, despite the known bias associated with visual estimates, no standardised training is available to improve these measurements. We developed a free online training tool, the COVERater, that effectively teaches users to visually estimate the percent cover of species in a variety of ecosystems (including alpine heath, arid lands, coral reefs, temperate reefs and wetlands).

Article Synopsis
  • The World Health Organisation updated cervical screening guidelines in 2021, shifting from cytology to primary high-risk HPV testing, resulting in increased awareness of HR-HPV among women, which can cause cancer.
  • The study aimed to identify potential treatment options for women with persistent HR-HPV or low-grade CIN and evaluate the effectiveness of these treatments based on HPV clearance rates and CIN regression.
  • Twelve studies were included in the review, revealing that certain treatments like vaginal gels and photodynamic therapy could potentially offer quicker resolution of HR-HPV and CIN regression compared to natural clearance.
