Diagnostic Performances of Urinary Methylmalonic Acid/Creatinine Ratio in Vitamin B12 Deficiency.

Sole measurement of plasma vitamin B12 is no longer enough to identify vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency. When plasma vitamin B12 is in the low-normal range, especially between 201 and 350 ng/L, B12 deficiency should be assessed by measurements of plasma homocysteine and/or plasma methylmalonic acid (MMA). However, these biomarkers also accumulate during renal impairment, leading to a decreased specificity for B12 deficiency.

Dramatic increase of central venous catheter-related infections associated with a high turnover of the nursing team.

Background & Aims: This retrospective study evaluated the impact of new organization during the moving to a new university pediatric hospital on the incidence of central catheter-related blood stream infections (CRBSIs) among children on long-term parenteral nutrition.

Methods: The study ran from April 2007 to March 2014, starting a year prior to reorganisation of the department of pediatric Hepato-Gastroenterology and Nutrition associated to moving the children to a new hospital in April 2008, and continuing for 6 years following the move. During this time, data from all children hospitalized in this department who received parenteral nutrition (PN) for more than 15 days were analysed.

Yellow fever is a vector-borne disease transmitted by an endemic mosquito in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. It causes fever and possibly liver and renal failure with hemorrhagic signs, which may be fatal. The yellow-fever vaccine is an attenuated vaccine that is recommended for all travelers over the age of 9 months in high-risk areas.

Mutational spectrum of CDKL5 in early-onset encephalopathies: a study of a large collection of French patients and review of the literature.

The CDKL5 gene has been implicated in the molecular etiology of early-onset intractable seizures with infantile spasms (IS), severe hypotonia and atypical Rett syndrome (RTT) features. So far, 48 deleterious alleles have been reported in the literature. We screened the CDKL5 gene in a cohort of 177 patients with early-onset seizures, including 30 men and 10 girls with Aicardi syndrome.

Prognosis of hypercalcemia in aerodigestive tract cancers: study of 136 recent cases.

Recent data issuing the prognostic impact of hypercalcemia on outcome of aerodigestive tract cancers are spare. To assess the prognosis and the survival of head and neck cancer patients with hypercalcemia, we reviewed 136 recent successive cases, including also oesophageal and lung cancers. Data were collected from a retrospective database (July 2002-January 2004).
