The article explores deployment of the Darwinian narrative of the "natural history of humanity" in Russian physical anthropology in the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. It traces two narratives developed by the leading Russian school of physical anthropology: one narrative advanced a universalist vision of collective scholarly enterprise working toward clarifying the missing links in the a priori accepted developmental evolutionary model. The other constructed a new language that undermined the idea of species/subspecies/races/nations/ as stable, externally bounded, and internally homogeneous units and attempted to rationalize imperial hybridity.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFExamined the role of biological factors (birth weight and perinatal medical complications) and psychosocial factors (maternal attitudes, paternal involvement, mother's personal state, marital adjustment, family relations, and socioeconomic status) in predicting long-term outcome of 90 Israeli adolescents born prematurely at very low birth weight (VLBW). As compared with 90 adolescents born full-term at normal birth weight (NBW), the VLBW children scored lower on all measures except reading comprehension. IQ, visual-motor coordination, and hyperactive behavior were predicted by both biological and psychosocial variables, visual memory by biological variables, and reading comprehension by psychosocial variables.

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS), performed on a woman in the 23rd menstrual week because of bilateral fetal hydronephrosis and suspected intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), documented trisomy 9 in all cells examined. Chromosomes of amniocytes and fetal blood lymphocytes were normal. The ongoing pregnancy was monitored closely, and at 37 weeks, a phenotypic normal male infant was delivered.
