Objectives: The Cancer Control Act requires the maintenance of regional cooperation pathways (RCP) for cancer treatment. In 2008, we started RCP for early detection of new gastric cancer after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). In gastric cancer treatment, RCP after surgical resection had been widely used, but little is known about RCP after ESD.

This article describes the perioperative complications, perioperative risk assessment, and perioperative management of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease, especially idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis( IPF), which are the leading diseases in respiratory dysfunction. In COPD, testing for forced expiratory volume during the first second and pulmonary diffusing capacity is important and an algorithm for testing has been presented by the Japanese Association for Chest Surgery. Acute exacerbation of IPF is the leading cause of postoperative mortality in Japan, and risk factors are being analyzed.

The subxiphoid approach in thymectomy provides better visibility around the left brachiocephalic vein than the lateral thoracic approach. Robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is easier to parform than video- assisted thoracoscopic surgery for surgery of the upper mediastinum, because the forceps can be moved with many joints. Robot-assisted thymectomy using the subxiphoid approach may be less traumatic and less invasive than median sternotomy.

Water temperature in glacial lakes affects underwater melting and calving of glaciers terminating in lakes. Despite its importance, seasonal lake temperature variations are poorly understood because taking long-term measurements near the front of calving glaciers is challenging. To investigate the thermal structure and its seasonal variations, we performed year-around temperature and current measurement at depths of 58-392 m in Lago Grey, a 410-m-deep glacial lake in Patagonia.

Basal melting of ice shelves is considered to be the principal driver of recent ice mass loss in Antarctica. Nevertheless, in-situ oceanic data covering the extensive areas of a subshelf cavity are sparse. Here we show comprehensive structures of temperature, salinity and current measured in January 2018 through four boreholes drilled at a ~3-km-long ice shelf of Langhovde Glacier in East Antarctica.
