Purpose: The availability of drugs and national public policies for patients with rare cancers, including sarcomas, varies in different parts of the world.

Methods: In this manuscript, we have conducted a comprehensive analysis to evaluate rare cancer policies in Latin American countries' national policy documents. Additionally, we have reviewed the approvals for sarcoma drugs in selected Latin American countries and compared them with US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA) approvals.

Harnessing in situ microbial communities to clean-up polluted natural environments is a potentially efficient means of bioremediation, but often the necessary genes to breakdown pollutants are missing. Genetic bioaugmentation, whereby the required genes are delivered to resident bacteria via horizontal gene transfer, offers a promising solution to this problem. Here, we engineered a conjugative plasmid previously isolated from soil, pQBR57, to carry a synthetic set of genes allowing bacteria to consume terephthalate, a chemical component of plastics commonly released during their manufacture and breakdown.

Current plastic production and consumption routes are unsustainable due to impact upon climate change and pollution, and therefore reform across the entire value chain is required. Neuroendocrine carcinomas are rare and aggressive malignancies, often diagnosed at advanced stages, leading to poor prognosis. Platinum-based chemotherapy is the standard first-line treatment for advanced neuroendocrine carcinomas; however after achieving response no consensus exists on maintenance therapies and the results are inconsistent. This review examines the role of maintenance therapy following response to first-line chemotherapy in gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine carcinomas.
