Article Synopsis
  • Echovirus 11' strains linked to a haemorrhagic syndrome epidemic in Hungarian obstetrics caused severe carditis, leading to the death of 13 newborns and revealed a lack of maternal immunity.
  • The use of a monovalent oral poliovirus vaccine effectively controlled the epidemic within two weeks, although 20% of vaccinated infants showed seroconversion to echovirus 11' without symptoms.
  • Genetic analysis of echovirus 11' showed distinct changes in the 5'-end and P1 region compared to prototype strains, indicating genetic evolution prior to the outbreak.
