Article Synopsis
  • The study examined demographics and management methods for iatrogenic ureteral injuries (IUIs) across various surgical specialties, focusing on predictors of complications like late ureteral strictures.
  • A retrospective analysis included 48 patients from urological, abdominal, and pelvic procedures performed between 2006 and 2019, with varied management approaches depending on whether injuries were detected during or after surgery.
  • Results showed 82% overall favorable outcomes, but 18 patients needed additional intervention, with predictors for complications linked to the side of the injury and the type of surgery performed, particularly colorectal procedures.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence and implications of malignant bladder cuff pathology in patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), noting a significant lack of previous literature on the topic.
  • Results showed that out of 305 patients, 4.6% had malignant bladder cuffs, which were primarily linked to ureteric tumors, resulting in higher rates of local recurrence and distant metastasis.
  • The findings suggest that bladder cuff excision (BCE) is crucial for managing ureteric tumors but may not be necessary for low-grade renal pelvis tumors, highlighting its role in improving patient outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-transitional cell carcinomas (non-TCC) in the upper urinary tract, such as squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and small cell carcinoma, are uncommon, with limited case reports available.
  • A review of 305 patients treated for upper tract urothelial carcinoma between 1983 and 2013 identified only 5 cases of non-TCC (1.6%).
  • The findings indicated that non-TCC cases had a significantly lower cancer-specific survival rate compared to transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) patients, with no occurrences of intravesical recurrence.
