Rapid onset brain plasticity at novel pharmacologic targets hypothetically drives innovations for rapid onset antidepressant actions.

Numerous new agents with rapid onset antidepressant effects are entering clinical trials and clinical practice. Studies focus on either first-line treatment of major depressive disorder or on patients whose major depressive disorder is resistant to prior antidepressant drugs. Novel agents target three very different central nervous system sites: as antagonists of -methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptors, as positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) A neurosteroid and benzodiazepine receptor sites, and as psychedelic agonists of serotonin 2A/2C receptors.

Far-field head-media optical interaction in heat-assisted magnetic recording.

We have used a plane wave expansion method to theoretically study the far-field head-media optical interaction in heat-assisted magnetic recording. For the Advanced Storage Technology Consortium media stack specifically, we notice the outstanding sensitivity related to the interlayer's optical thickness for media reflection and the magnetic layer's light absorption. With 10 nm interlayer thickness change, the recording layer absorption can be changed by more than 25%.

Cutoff wavelength of ridge waveguide near field transducer for disk data storage.

The electromagnetic eigenmodes of and light transmission through a C-aperture to the far field, and to a storage medium, have been studied based on the full vectorial finite difference method. It is found that the cutoff wavelength of C-aperture waveguides in a gold film is much longer than that in a perfect electric conductor, and the fundamental mode is confined in the gap and polarized with the electric field along the gap. The light transmission resonance through C-apertures to far field and to a storage medium occurs at wavelengths below the waveguide cutoff wavelength.

Granular acute lymphoblastic leukemia in adults: report of a case and review of the literature.

The diagnosis of granular acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) can be problematic as the cytoplasmic granules found in many blast cells may mimic those seen in acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). This rare variant of B-cell ALL is more commonly diagnosed in children, but may occur in adults. We report a case of granular B-ALL in a 56-year-old female and review the literature.

Interaction of sickle cell trait with hereditary spherocytosis: splenic infarcts and sequestration.

The association of sickle cell trait (SCT) and hereditary spherocytosis (HS) has been reported in only 18 patients. Three of these 18 patients experienced splenic infarct or acute splenic sequestration. We report here a 46-year-old African-American male, the oldest reported case to date, who experienced episodes of hemolysis and severe left upper quadrant pain for the past 26 years.
