The authors present a retrospective study analyzing the radiographic frequency of avascular necrosis following distal Chevron osteotomy of the first metatarsal. A total of 164 procedures performed on 104 patients were evaluated radiographically at a follow-up period of 12 to 91 months, with a mean followup of 30.4 months.

This last group often was divided into patients with advanced but perhaps still curable locoregional disease and incurable patients with distant metastases. As increasing numbers of prognostic factors were recognized, efforts were made to incorporate them into the staging systems to combine patients with similar prognosis into the same stages.

This case study was written to acquaint the reader with the etiology, incidence, pathology, clinical course, and treatment of a variation of the malignant fibrous histiocytoma. In review of the literature, only three cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (myxoid variant) were found in the foot. The authors want to impress on the reader the necessity of the pathologic study of any lesion in the foot regardless of its gross appearance.
