Def1 is predominantly cytoplasmic, and DNA damage signals cause its proteolytic processing, liberating its N-terminus to enter the nucleus. Cytoplasmic functions for this abundant protein have not been identified.

Background: Heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) represents a major comorbidity in the elderly and is associated with cognitive impairment (CoI) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
