The methane seeps on the Pacific margin of Costa Rica support extensive animal diversity and offer insights into deep-sea biogeography. During five expeditions between 2009 and 2019, we conducted intensive faunal sampling via 63 submersible dives to 11 localities at depths of 300-3600 m. Based on these expeditions and published literature, we compiled voucher specimens, images, and 274 newly published DNA sequences to present a taxonomic inventory of macrofaunal and megafaunal diversity with a focus on invertebrates.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe opossum shrimp Euchaetomera plebeja Hansen, 1912 (Mysida; Mysidae) is one of the nine described species currently known in this genus. Until now, it has been considered a rare species, only partly illustrated, known from western Mexico, western Colombia, Peru, and Chile (one specimen in each locality), with a possible additional record off Hawaii. In a recent study, it was recorded abundantly in western Mexico where it was collected in 20 localities, all in the Gulf of California.

The data revealed that, notwithstanding the effect upon pretreatment seemed to be major compared to the effect upon frozen storage, the latter was existent. Pretreatment yielded volatile compounds that could be associated with (bio)chemical reaction pathways in both vegetables.

The current work aimed at understanding the consequences of hydrothermally induced changes in the physical state of cell biopolymers (cell wall, protein, and starch) in modulating the digestion kinetics of starch and proteins in common beans. The hydrothermal treatments were designed such that targeted microstructural/biopolymer changes occurred.
