On the basis of experimental and clinical data, the subclinical ischemic brain damage resulting from temporary clamping of the carotid artery during performance of the reconstructive operation has been established. The changes were revealed in sufficient, according to the existing criteria, collateral circulation. Before placing the clamp onto the carotid artery as a preventive method for intraoperative medicamental brain protection, intraarterial administration of piracetam, which possesses anti-ischemic, membrane stabilizing and antioxidant properties, has been suggested.

Results of determining the total protein level in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were used for the first time for identifying the character of the blood presence in a blood-containing fluid. A new, so-called double protein-CSF test is offered. For performing this test approximately equal volumes of the fluid are placed in a series (but not less than three) test-tubes.

To measure the spinal fluid pressure and its controlled extraction, including protracted drainage of the fluid-containing communications, a portable arrangement, in which a direct relationship between the extracted spinal fluid and its changing pressure is utilized, is recommended.
