Late-onset Sepsis in Preterm Neonates is Associated with Higher Risks of Cerebellar Hemorrhage and Lower Motor Scores at Three Years of Age.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of late-onset sepsis (LOS) in preterm infants on brain injury and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 36 months corrected age (CA).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 203 preterm neonates of 24-32 weeks gestational age who were admitted between January and December 2017 at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a maternity hospital in Kuwait. The cases were stratified into no sepsis, early-onset sepsis (first onset of sepsis ≤ 72 hours postnatally), and LOS (> 72 hours postnatally).

Background: The effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant women and newborns is incompletely understood. Preliminary data shows a rather fluctuating course of the disease from asymptomatic or mild symptoms to maternal death. However, it is not clear whether the disease increases the risk of pregnancy-related complications.

Symptomatic spontaneous pneumothorax in term newborn infants.

The association between congenital major urinary tract anomalies (CMUTA) and spontaneous pneumothorax in term newborn infants (SPTNI) is controversial. We conducted a case-control study to test the hypothesis that SPTNI is associated with CMUTA. We compared 80 term infants with spontaneous pneumothorax to 80 healthy control infants.

Air emboli in the intracranial venous sinuses of neonates.

Air bubbles in the intracranial venous sinuses are known as a consequence to different causes including trauma, infection, and administration of intravenous contrast. Most of the previous reports demonstrated such cases in adults, with subsequent complications. We are presenting two premature babies who developed asymptomatic air bubbles in the right cavernous and left transverse sinuses, introduced accidentally upon cannulation of scalp veins.
